What’s Makha Bucha Day ?
Makha Bucha is one of the most important days of Buddhism, which will take place on a full moon day on the third lunar month. This year, Makha Bucha falls on 16 February. Makha Bucha is celebrated to mark a significant gathering that was held between the Buddha and 1,250 of his first disciples. The 1,250 disciples gathered without prior appointment. All of them were enlightened disciples and had been ordained by Buddha himself. On the day, it was the full moon day of the third lunar month.
In Thailand, Makha Bucha is designated as a national holiday. On the evening of Makha Bucha, temples in Thailand hold a candlelight procession and circumambulation around the main called “wian thian” (wian means to circle around; thain means candle)
